About Us

Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society was formed in 1978 to help our members with genealogical research through education, publication of information and preservation of records. Root Cellar is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

Membership meetings are held the every 2nd Thursday of the month except July and August and include a formal program and speaker.  Meetings are held 7 pm – 8:30 pm at the Christ Community Church, 5025 Manzanita Ave., Carmichael.

A daytime workshop is held every 3rd Wednesday of the month year-round. This hosted yet informal gathering is designed for researchers to get help from others with their genealogical “brickwalls”.  Frequently a member will give an overview of a handy genealogical resource. Workshops are held 1 pm – 3 pm at the Sylvan Community Center, 7521 Community Drive, Citrus Heights.

Guests are always welcome at the meetings and workshops.  Come check us out!

An all-day seminar is held annually in March or April and requires registration. Click on the Calendar tab for the current Seminar.  See the Spring Semiar tab on www.rootcellar.org for details.

The library that Root Cellar maintains is a treasure trove. The Library contains over 6,000 volumes from nearly every state and many countries.  There are more than 150 books on California alone. Also available for reading and purchase are several publications containing data that Root Cellar members have extracted from local records held at the Center for Sacramento History on subjects including state militia, state prison convicts, cemeteries, divorces and coroner's records.  See the Library tab on www.rootcellar.org for the searchable catalog.

The library is housed at the California State Archives, 1020 ‘O’ Street, 4th floor in Sacramento. It is open 9:30 am – 4 pm Monday - Friday.
