Follow Friday - Jamboree DNA Day

Editor's note: Today's post was written by Sandra Gardner-Benward

Wow what a long day but a good day.......... I took so many DNA classes today I am almost DNA'd out!! Well for today anyway.
.

Registration went smoothly. Roots Magic again sponsored the Jamboree
Bags........  excellent, carries a lot, and strong.

1-How DNA will Change the Face of Irish Genealogy with Dr Maurice Gleeson  (Psychiatrist and Pharmaceutical Physician, Actor and Genetic Genealogist) "Since genetic genealogy emerged as a new science, man researchers (both academic and Citizen Scientists) have been exploring the genetic signature of the Irish."  Good presentation but I don't have any Irish so I guess it was not as important to me as it was to others. But I do want to watch a movie called "Philomenia" .... that's all I know.

2-Making the Connection Between You Family Tree and DNA with Cheri Mello (Genealogist. Math Teacher with degrees in psychology, sociology, human and child development and master's in education) "....learning how to maximize the results by generating a Gedcom to pinpoint the common ancestor" the entire session was all about how to create a GedCom and export it and import it. Cheri showed this process with every genealogy software. The purpose of this exercise was to be able to create a gedcom to import it into your space with the results and matches with your DNA results. Also she went over how to look at other's gedcoms and how to read them. I am interested in creating several gedcom's with only certain included, so I will be working on that.

3-Beyond X and Y: The Promise and Pitfalls of Autosomal DNA Testing with Bonny Robinson Cook (Genetic Genealogist) & Judy G Russell JD, CG, CGL (Professional Genealogist, Lawyer, Author and she runs the blog 'The Legal Genealogist') ....... "Autosomal DNA testing is the new kid on the block." Judy is such a power house speaker. She knows her stuff but is self taught. Her specialty is the law but is self taught in the DNA arena............   the new buzz word in Autosomal. As most of you know ........ DNA-  is a test for male to male to male (father to father to father) and only males take this test; mtDNA is a test that goes up the mothers line - mother to mother to mother- all children (male & female) & all granddaughters receive DNA from their mothers. AND now the new kid on the block AUTOSOMAL/family finder/ relative finder. Everyone benefits from the test. BUT always always use the DNA results and information along with the paper trail.  They work together.

LUNCHEON:  PANEL- Peering into the Future of Genetic Genealogy with Blaine Bettinger PhD, JD (The Genetic Genealogist) ; Jake Byrnes PhD (AncestyDNA); Bennett Greenspan (Family Tree DNA); Joanna Mountain PhD (23andMe); Diahan Southard (Genetic Genealogy Consultant) " What new DNA tests or tools will be available to genealogists in the next year? The next five years?" All I can say is I was very hungry by the time noon came around and I ate everything in sight. Guess who I sat with?  Denise Richmond and hubby Scott. They look great. So good to see them again.

4-Using Autosomal DNA to Explore Your Ancestry with Blaine Bettinger PhD, JD (The Genetic Genealogist) "Genealogists can use autosomal DNA for ethnicity estimates, finding long lost cousins, and examining specific problems, including adoption." Do not overestimate what the DNA can do for you.

5-Autosomal DNA: Discovering Your Ancestors in You with CeCe Moore. (Professional Genetic Genealogist, and is owner of The DNA Detectives)"Examples from CeCe's research will be shared to demonstrate the potential for using autosomal DNA to discover more about our ancestors." Something new for me is using spreadsheets, a lot of elbow grease, and chromosome mapping. his is something I can follow but don't know how to do it. ahhhh something new to learn,

6-Advanced Techniques for Use of Autosomal DNS Tests to Break Through Genealogists Brick Walls with Tim Janzen MD (South Tabor Family Physicians Portland Oregan- Family Practice Physician) "... will describe how to use autosomal DNA tests to solve genealogical questions. ... with many examples", this was way over my head, I didn't understand much of anything. Again, a lot of the discussion was about using spreadsheets for chromosome mapping. AHHHHHHH!!!!

7-FamilyTreeDNA Open Discussion and Assistance.... the final hour of the day is devoted to Q&A and personal assistance by each of the three major DNA testing companies.  (I have chosen Family Tree DNA ...  the others are AncestryDNA and 23&Me.) I am not sure that I can even repeat some of the questions being asked and the answers given. I wanted to know very basic things like if I have taken the mtDNA, and autosomal and my sons have taken the YDNA and the autosomal - is the  program able to make matches through all the different tests or is the comparison only between mtDNA to others that have taken the mtDNA. OR YDNA to YDNA? simple. But I didn't ask, I will wait to till the exhibit hall opens tomorrow and ask then.

The new buzz words in DNA are Autosomal, SNP, Chromosome Mapping, Triangulation, Genetic Genealogy. So get ready for it...........

Marilyn made it in safely today, so we went to dinner at the Daily Grill in the hotel. We had a great talk about DNA day and the Jamboree coming up. I had the best blackened tilapia with asparagus and brown rice. The price was too much but the portions were large.........   boy that was so good.

This has been a very long and very full day, lots of information, lots to think about, I am so tireddddddd ...........................................................ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
